Description

When it comes to phonics, one of the most fundamental rules is the relationship between the letters “C” and “K” and their sounds.

Specifically, both “C” and “K” can make  /C/ sound, as in “cat,” and kite.

When beginning /C/ sounds followed by the vowel letters “A,” “O,” or “U” or consonant, ,we use letter C. example; cat, cup, cot, clap.

However, when followed by the vowel letters “E,” “I,” or “Y,  we use letter “K”. for example; “kite”, “keen”, and “key”.

It’s important to note that these rules are not always consistent in the English language and there are many exceptions. However, teaching these rules can be a helpful starting point for children learning to read and write.
